If you are a fan of fashion and anime, you have had a good year. Loewe x Miyazaki collaboration, Gucci x Crunchyroll partnership, Undercover collection is essentially a Neon Genesis cosplay. Any of these would be the high point for trendy anime heads, and we got all three. Now anime distribution company Funimation is delivering another gem: Akira Kaneda jacket, arguably the most popular clothing in anime history, arrives in North America.
In case you are not familiar and do not know what it is, AKIRA is a manga (comic) and anime (film) drawn, written, and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo in the 1980s, widely known for introducing the rest of the world to modern Japanese animation. … In short, this is the story of a teenager from a biker gang named Kaneda and his psychic friend Tetsuo, which takes place in the cyberpunk of Neo Tokyo. Both manga and anime were noted for their extreme dedication to realistic detail, and at the time of the film’s release, it was the most expensive anime ever made in Japan.
The opening scene – a fight between gangs of motorcyclists – is renowned for its toughness and gives the first glimpse of Akira’s shabby-inspired clothing. This is definitely a showy model – a bright red racer with slouching shoulder pads. In the anime, a pill flaunts on the back – Kaneda’s gang is called the Capsules.
The film has inspired countless projects in its own genre and has also influenced more popular directors such as George Miller and Jordan Peel. Back in 2018, Kanye West called it “Kanye leather jacket’s greatest creative inspiration,” and it’s not as wild as it sounds: the music video for “Stronger” is an elaborate AKIRA tribute, while a few daredevils on the web claim that the style Kaneda is the seed of Kanye’s the iconic pink polo shirt.
AKIRA also has a strong presence in the fashion world. Anime has well-documented streetwear positions, and there is no better example than Supreme 2017. AKIRA collection, parts of which can be obtained from Grailed for up to $1400. 2013 Commes des Garçons catalog AKIRA, a thematic collaboration between Rei Kawakubo and Otomo. You can still buy this Kenzo sweatshirt with AKIRA font.
More generally, Otomo’s work has shifted the dialogue between anime and fashion. This is partly due to his knowledge of clothing, although AKIRA is a science fiction story, the world he lives in is not that far from ours. People drink in bars and drive to work, they wear polo and leather jacket anime, even when they work to undermine public opinion. “There is nothing extravagant about clothes,” says Levy. “It’s a general atmosphere of realism and attention to detail.”
So, the anime leather jacket is the piece that made Kaneda great, which launched thousands of Kanye-inspired Tumblr pages. Levy argues that this is truly a metonym for what we all really want – a motorcycle. “All we need is Kaneda’s bike. Tetsuo wants to destroy the world, but what he really wants is Kaneda’s bike, he jokes. “But if you don’t have a bike, the second-best thing is a jacket.”

However, the production of the Kanye West biker jacket was challenging because it changed from panel to panel and from frame to frame. Levy’s team kept a few basic elements – the clamps, shoulder pads, sleeve ends, the overall 80s vibe – while tweaking the silhouette for non-animated people to bring the anime jacket over the shoulder to its Platonic ideal.
Hardcore fans may already be protesting, “There is no capsule on the back!” Yes, there is a patch/sticker on Akira Kaneda’s jacket in the anime, but it is clearly not in the manga. Levy explains that Otomo wanted to stick with this original version, partly because of his loyalty to the manga, and partly because it seemed inappropriate to put a pill on a collectible. The anime combined episodes from different storylines. In the finale, Akira acquires a katana and returns to Toshima to fight Shiki.
A version of these anime-style jackets was released in some parts of the world a few years ago to commemorate AKIRA’s 30th anniversary, but this is the first time it will be available in North America. He appeared on Funimation on July 13th – and there are only 300 of them.
Recall that in May 2021, the premiere of the Hollywood adaptation of “Kanye West Akira, filmed by Taika Waititi and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, was released. Robert Pattison, Michael Fassbender (Tetsuo), Justin Timberlake, Joaquin Phoenix and Paul Deino (Kaneda), Gary Oldman (Colonel), Helena Bonham-Carter, and Keira Knightley (Miyako) have applied for roles in the film at various times.
