On Monday, Sapir Berman took part in her first match since her becoming transgender. The football referee from Israel, who is 26, appeared on the soccer field during the Israeli Premier League’s game between the Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Haifa teams. And it was the first time when a transgender has judged a sports game in the country.
The Israel Football Association, posted a photo of her, saying they are proud to do such a first step with Sapir. But Berman is not the first transgender referee in football history, as another referee from Britain, Lucy Clarke, became transgender in 2018.
Sapir shared that she considered herself a woman all the time. She added that when she was alone, she divided the two words because she thought that society won’t accept the real her. She was a successful person being a judge, but she always felt like a woman.
Many fans came to the game to support Berman. She said that the players hugged her and even started using the feminine form of words when addressing her.
