Union Cycliste Internationale Disqualified Emily Bridges From the Race

emily bridges was disqualified

British transgender cyclist Emily Bridges had to take part in the women’s race this weekend but everything changed when she was disqualified. The 21-year-old woman was known earlier as Zach. She made her coming out as a transgender in 2020. And for some time she used to compete with men.

Zach started hormone therapy last year and now got the opportunity to legally compete in women’s competitions. The fact that she registered as a man who started hormone therapy made the Union Cycliste Internationale disqualify her from the women’s race.

To remind you, UK Cycling Union rules say that transgender athletes must keep a blood testosterone level of no more than five nanomoles per liter for 12 months of the competitive period.

We understand Emily’s disappointment but rules for that and rules to follow them. Hopefully next year we will cheer for the cyclist in the women’s race.
