Official site of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) announced that it had cancelled the joint bid of Belarus and Latvia to host the 2021 IIHF World Championship.
IIHF decided to postpone the World Cup-2021 because of the impossibility to ensure the safety of the tournament in Minsk, reads the statement of the IIHF.
The Federation notes that the Council IIHF will consider the status of Latvia as one of the organizers of the upcoming tournament and will explore the possibility of holding the championship only in this country.
The World Hockey Championship was to be held from May 21 to June 6 in Minsk and Riga.
The question of moving the World Championship from Minsk was raised after rallies against Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus. The protests began after the Belarusian Central Election Commission approved Lukashenko’s victory in the presidential election and announced that opposition candidate Svetlana Tihanovskaya had come in second place. Many people in Belarus, as well as EU countries and the United States, did not recognize the election results.
Belarus hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship only once, in 2014. Latvia also hosted the world championship once, in 2006.
